FAQS About Interchangeable Knitting Needles

What Are Interchangeable Knitting Needles?

Me holding Zing Blue aluminum interchangeable needles with aqua cotton dishcloth project on the go

Interchangeable Knitting Needles are a pair of needle tips joined by a flexible cable. However, the cable isn’t fixed. They’re fabulous for knitting in the round. Sweaters, hats, socks, and more.

Something for everyone to try depending on your preferences. Start any task knowing you have the right needles! Learning this is difficult, but you’ll get better.

(Note: These aren’t straights. If you only use the tips, you risk the stitches falling off! You can work flat pieces, though.)

How Do They Differ From Fixed Circulars?

The cord isn’t fused to the needles at each end. The knitting needles and cable are separate pieces connecting with a screw link or twist and click. Typically, the ends have a screw-type fitting. The cables feature a hollow end. Longer needles are created with cable connectors between cord lengths and two needles.

The attaching method varies: a click-connection, a screw on, or a little key for locking the tips to the cables.

They’re also more expensive, but you’ll often find them on sale. On seller websites, you’ll often find offers for a discount on your purchase if you sign up for their newsletter. Take advantage of the more economical cost!

What’s To Love About Interchangeables?

Knitting patterns call for specific needle size and cable length. Having a quality interchangeable needle set means you have many options.

This saves realizing a craft basket contains knitting needles they never use! (1) Sometimes, they have multiples of the same needle size! The costs of buying multiple new needles when building a collection is significant.

Quality interchangeable knitting needles solve these problems.

The best interchangeable needles have various needle tips with cables in a case. Mix and match the tips with the and cables. Construct as many circular knitting needles as the parts allow. When the project grows, the weight rests on your lap.

My Knit Picks Rainbow Options Interchangeable Knitting Needles Size US 8 - 4.0mm with cowl project in multicolored kid mohair yarn

Thread thin embroidery yarn through the pin hole (the pinhole is before the tip) on the needle or connector for a life line. Great for lace knitting. Work on many projects with the same tip.

Remove the cables’ needles and add two end caps to secure your stitches. Then use the ends on another project. Make extra-long cables by using a connector to join different interchangeable needles cables.

How Are They Measured?

From tip to tip. (The length of the interchangeable knitting needles and the wire connecting them combined.) They range from 16″ to 40″. These measurements are from the end of the needle to the cable connection, similar to how fixed circular needles.

What Does The Best Interchangeable Needle Set Have?

Rainbow colored wooden interchangeable needles with purple cable on mohair cowl in pale lilac

The criteria for the best interchangeable needle set:

  • Smooth joins (nothing is more important than this part!)
  • Both parts remain connected
  • The best interchangeable needles have flexible cables
  • At least 6 diameters of tips
  • At least 4 lengths of cables
  • Smart looking case (it only matters if you want it to)
  • End caps
  • Tightening keys for screw connections

What Makes The Best Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set

Most needle sets are an investment. Consider these criteria before buying. There are many features to learn and sort through, but I break them down for you.

What Needle Material?

They’re made from many materials, like aluminum, carbon fiber, stainless steel, wood, bamboo, or plastic. (Crochet hooks are made of the same, and you can find interchangeable ones too!)

The best kinds of interchangeables are high-quality items. Choose the material you enjoy working with and what suits your preference and yarns.

What Knitting Projects Do You Do?

Having larger ones for your making is good if you create many items. Opt for smaller needle sizes if you’re a lace knitter or sock knitter.

Short Or Long Tips?

Some crafters swear by long ones (5-5.5″.) This way, they’re easier to hold and don’t cause cramping in the hands. The short ones (3.5-4″) make smaller circles. Great for socks or sleeves.

What Are Lace Tips?

Some are ‘Lace Tip needles”. This style has sharp and pointy for intricate stitches when knitting lace patterns.

Not So Kinky

Choose flexible and smooth cables. Some sets have rotating swivel ones. Much easier to use when in knitting action mode!

Sweet Connections

Connectors create extra-long cables. Perfect for bigger works, afghans, and blankets. Most of the best have these.

Cables, black stoppers, cord connectors and tightening keys

Let’s Put A Stop To It

End caps stop stitches coming off the cables when the needles are removed. Perfect for trying on a garment to check it.

In addition, for when you have multiple works in progress on the go, or if you’ve run out of cable space in the middle of your creation.

Other Nifty Tools

Some sets have a pin. This tool ensures the connection point is strong.(Don’t lose these, as the times when they go missing means it’s hard to get any knitting done.)

Grippers connect the tip and cable. Place one over the tip and another over the wire. Twist the parts in the opposite direction.

Stitch Markers come in handy to mark a round beginning, pattern repeats, and where to increase and decrease.

This creates the best knitting experience. Something to look at for your next project! An interchangeable knitting set is a worthwhile investment.

If you already have a choice for your interchangeable knitting needles set, I’d love to hear about it. Tell me in the comments. Have questions or something you need to know? I’m happy to help answer your question.

    • Hi Jemima. Knit Picks makes Sunstruck needles. Screw the tip into the cable end to attach the cable and needle tips. Place the key (a straight pin with a loop at the end) in the hole at the end of the cable, and twist the needle tip to tighten. Here’s a link.

  1. Hi Jodie,
I’ve been recently looking into investing in an exchangeable needle set and saw the Clover set. In general I really like Clover needles; they fit my hands well, have nice points and seem to hold up very well. I work with smaller items though and was wondering if you knew of a good set with smaller cords? Cords and needles that would give a total length of 12” and 14”??

    • Hi Katie, some lovely people got back in touch with their suggestions.

From Imported – Possibly, I think the ChiaoGoo TWIST Shorties Red Lace Interchangeable Knitting Set comes with 2” & 3” tips and 5”, 6” and 8” cable lengths…(tip sizes US 0, US 1, US 1.5, US 2.25, and US 3) so….
      2” tip + 5” cable + 2” tip = 9” length / 3” tip + 5” cable + 3” tip = 11” length
      2” tip + 6” cable + 2” tip = 10” length / 3” tip + 6” cable + 3” tip = 12” length
      2” tip + 8” cable + 2” tip = 12” length / 3” tip + 8” cable + 3” tip = 14” length
The blue shorties set are larger tip sizes.

From Lunabella- You are correct! Both the red mini shorties and the blue small shorties will give you 9” to 14” total lengths. I have both sets and love them for their versatility!

      I’ve taken a look at the Blue ChiaoGoo Twist Shorties (US-4 Thru US-8) Interchangeable Knitting Set as both the above knitters mentioned this set. The set contains both 2″and 3″ (5cm & 8cm) tips allowing for short circulars 9” through 14″ (23cm – 36cm) long. Sizes are US 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.5 and 5 mm) with three Blue, X-Flex (S) join cables – 5″, 6″ & 8″ (13cm, 15cm & 30cm).

I hope this is a good start. Cheers Jodie

  2. Hi Jodie,
I am specifically looking for a swiveling interchangeable needle set in wood or bamboo, any brands\sets that fit those parameters?

    Reply
      • Hi Jodie, Thank you for your suggestions. I purchased the Hiya Hiya 4in Interchangeable needles. They are exactly what I was looking for! They swivel, the bamboo (or maybe it is wood?) is a good combo of grip\slip and the storage case is both pretty and functional. I just finished my first real sweater, the Weekender, during a KAL with my local yarn store. I learned that I really like these needles and that I did NOT enjoy knitting slim sleeves in the round with DPNs. I am thinking of buying shorter tips that would work with this set in order to get a smaller diameter circle.

        • Hi Penelope. Great to hear! How lovely to finish your first real sweater. I just took at look at The Weekender design by Andrea Mowry, it’s gorgeous. So glad to have been able to help you find needles to suit you. Cheers Jodie

  3. Hi Jodie, What a wonderful compilation you have made for us. I am 50, and just learned to knit about four months ago. I had no idea I would love knitting so much. I just finished my first project, 800 yard shawl by Expression Fiber Art, called Copeland. I accidentally got Roving, but I loved it so much, I insisted to knit that into a very fine shawl. My next is Leander Shawl, by Expression Fiber Arts, and using some wool from FibreFox in the UK…should be here in the next couple of days…Going from bulky to fingerling. Again, thank you for putting time into this, I am ordering some circular knitting needles, and were not sure which ones to get, and this was fantastic….Happy Knitting…Ginger

    • Hi Ginger. Chandi’s designs are stunning. My readers and I would love to see a picture of your finished shawl. You’ll notice a difference going from bulky to fingering yarn. Have fun! Cheers Jodie

  4. Hi There,

New reader, I tried to look through your responses but didn’t see anything mentioned here. I have been using the Clover needles as individual purchases. Do you know if screw on cables and needles can be compatible. are there certain brands that you know of that work well with the Clover interchangeable needles?

  5. Hi Jodie, thank you for this lovely review. Do you mind sharing the length size of the Clover Takumi needle tips? Is there a significant difference from the length of the Chiaogoo Red Lace 4inch tips.
I am looking into buying a complete set but just need a bit of guidance as to needle length. I am leaning towards the 5 inch set but would still like to be able to knit hats. Will it suffice to buy an extra 8inch chord and just use 5 inch needles (18 inch all in all) or is that not recommendable? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thank you

    • Hi Cheryl. Tip length to join is 9.5 cm (3.75″) for the needles sized US 3 to 10 1/2 (3.25mm to 6.5 mm), but 10.5 cm (4.13 inches) for US sizes 8, 13 & 15 (8 mm, 9mm, & 10mm). These are shorter tips than the 5″ set you’re considering. What 5″ set are you interested in? Knowing that is helpful, since there may not be an 8-inch cord. Cheers Jodie

  6. I have the knitpicks mosaic set and use them with no complaints. However, I’ve recently started knitting hats so want a set that allows for a 16” circular, has a bulky option (at least US 15), and allows for longer, flexible cables to use the magic loop method. Considering ChiaGoo 4” spins – concern is comments on the coupling not being smooth between cable and needle; Knitters Pride Special Ginger Short Tips – concerned about cable not being flexible enough for magic circle, and the Clover Takumi circular – concerned about the coupling coming apart from reviews I’ve read. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions you have about these needles or my concerns. I’m so used to using a key to tighten the coupling it makes me nervous to not have one. Thank you

    • Hi Tracey. Your concerns about the ChiaoGoo set are understandable, but I think the cables are fantastic! Knitter’s Pride cables are plastic and have moderate memory, so they curl up a bit. As you are happy working with your Knit Picks Mosaic set, I imagine the wood tips will suit you. Knitter’s Pride and Knit Picks cables are interchangeable. Follow your instincts regarding having a key to tighten the connection and the confidence this has already given you. You should also choose a set you can return if you aren’t satisfied. Cheers Jodie

  7. For a couple of the sets you mention that “You can’t use the small size tip cables with the large size tip cables”. I’m not clear what you meant by this. In one set there are 4 cables, in the other 3. Do you mean to say you can’t combine short and long cables or do the cables come in different tip sizes for use with a subset of needles in the set?

    Reply
    • Hi Bob. The larger needle tips match the larger cable connections. The cables that fit the larger tips won’t fit the smaller tips. Separate cables are used for smaller needles. Cheers Jodie

  8. I just purchased the Clover Takumi set. I really enjoy it except the cables are difficult to use for the Magic Loop. Are there any cables that are more flexible that I can buy to use with the Clover tips. Also, I don’t think the cables join for a blanket project. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Jody. That’s great! My research hasn’t turned up another cable compatible with Clover Tips. Here are the Clover connectors to join your cables. Did you try putting the cable in hot water for a while to see if that helped? Cheers Jodie

  9. Hi
I’m using hiya hiya sharp 5’’ interchangeable for 5 years now and I like them.

I would like to try new one and I think the knitter’s pride Zing seams interesseting.
    I like the color.

Does it feel similar to knit with them ?

    • Hi Caroline. I have the Knitter’s Pride Zing Interchangeable Deluxe Set. I am working on a review. I love the jewel colors of the needle tips and they have a hole for a lifeline. Each needle tip measures 4.5 inches.

The join between the cable and tip is smooth but you must use the key to tighten the connection. I did a test without using the key to tighten and the screw connection came loose. The plastic cables have a slight memory.

The point is not as sharp as the Hiya Hiya needles. I’ll let you know when my review for the Zing Deluxe set is published. Cheers Jodie

  10. I’m interested in IC needles that use coated steel cables, like the Chiaogoo. Heard that Lantern Moon does. Any other brands that you know of with steel cables?

    Reply
    • Hi Ann. Since Dec 2021 Knitter’s Pride bought the Lantern Moon brand. The Lantern Moon cables are made of nylon-coated stainless steel with 24K plated solid brass connectors. The cord rotates at the join. There are also fixed cords that don’t swivel. I will do some research to see if there are any other interchangeable brands that have coated steel cables. Cheers Jodie

Further to this Knitter’s Pride make Mindful Swivel cords. They work with all types of Knitter’s Pride interchangeable needles. The stainless steel cores are coated with nylon. They are also marked at one-inch intervals to help with measuring.

  11. So happy that I came across your site. I am new to knitting. I have learned so much.
I purchased the Knit Pick rainbow set and find it very comfortable. Before this purchase , I was using separate circular cable Knitters Pride. Found that if I purchase Knitters Pride set, they are compatible with Knit Picks.
I will continue to look for your site. Thank you, Agnes
