What Are Interchangeable Knitting Needles?

Interchangeable Knitting Needles are made up of a pair of needle tips joined in the middle by a flexible cable. The difference between these knitting needles and circular needles is the cable is not fixed.

You can attach and unattach them from the cable.

Function: Like fixed circular needles, they are fabulous for knitting in the round. Think sweaters, hats, socks, and knitting large flat panels.

How Do They Differ From Fixed Circulars?

Interchangeable Knitting Needles differ from fixed circular knitting needle. They don’t have a cord fused to the knitting needles at each end.

Interchangeables, as they’re fondly known, have removable needle parts. The needles and cable are separate pieces that connect with a screw link or twist and click.

Typically the ends of interchangeable knitting needles have a screw type fitting. The cables have a hollow end the tip screws into.

How to attach the ends to the cable of the interchangeable needles varies by different brands of knitting needles.

Some knitting needles have a click connection, some screw on, and some need a little key for locking the tips to the cables.

What’s To Love

Knitting patterns call for a specific needle size and cable length. The advantage of having a quality interchangeable needle set is you have many different options.

This saves knitters the awkward realization their craft basket contains needles they never use! (1) Sometimes they find they have multiples of the same needle size! They’d forgotten what ones they already had.

Quality Interchangeable Knitting Needles solve all these problems.

Interchangeable needles consist of various diameters of needles with different cables all in a neat and tidy case.

The knitting needles and cables can be mixed and matched. They can construct as many circular knitting needles as the number of parts allowss.

The stitches are distributed across the cord of the interchangeable needles. When the project grows, the weight rests on your lap.

Cables replace the need for stitch holders when trying on your knitted garment.

Ability to change needle sizes while knitting, to trial which ones get the right gauge for your chosen project.

Thread thin embroidery yarn through the pin hole (the pin hole is usually jus before the very tip) on the needle or connector to use as a life line while you knit. A great feature for lace knitting.

Work on many projects with the same needle tip. Remove the knitting needles from the cable add two end caps to secure your stitches. Then use the ends on another project.

Make extra-long cables by using a connector to join different interchangeable needles cables together.

Less clutter and save money because you don’t have to purchase multiple fixed circulars, you can just have one set of interchangeable needles!

How Are They Measured?

From tip to tip. Meaning the length of both the interchangeable needles and the wire connecting them are combined. Giving you the total measurement of the needle.

It can vary, typically standard ones range from 16 to 40 inches.

What Makes The Best Interchangeable Needle Set?

The best interchangeable needle set should have these features:

  • Smooth joins where the needle tips join to the cable
  • Both parts remain connected (there’s nothing more annoying than connections coming loose when you are knitting)
  • The best interchangeable needles have flexible cables, not stiff and don’t kink
  • At least 6 different diameters of tips
  • At least 4 different lengths of cables
  • Smart looking case
  • The best interchangeable needles include end caps

Things To Consider Before Buying an Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set

Most sets on the market are an investment. You need to ask yourself these questions before making a purchase.

What Needle Material Do You Like To Knit With?

Interchangeable needles are made from many materials – Aluminium, carbon fiber, stainless steel, wood, bamboo, and plastic.

The best interchangeable knitting needles are made with quality items. Choose the material you enjoy working with and what best suits the majority of your projects and yarns.

What Type Of Knitting Projects Do You Mostly Do?

If you create a range of projects from hats to blankets having larger-sized ones is a good idea. If you are a lace knitter or sock knitter, then opt for smaller needle sizes.

Short Or Long Tips?

Some knitters swear by interchangeable needles with long ones typically 5 to 5.5″, they are easier to hang on to and don’t cause cramping in hands.

The short ones typically, 3.5 to 4″, have an advantage as they make a smaller circle. Great for knitting socks or sleeves.

These measurements are from the end of the needle to the cable connection.

The best interchangeable needles concerning tip length is what suits you best.

What Are Lace Tips?

Some knitting needles tips are described as ‘Lace Tip needles”. They’re sharp and pointy to help with the intricate stitches when knitting lace patterns.

Often these interchangeable needles made of metal to help the fine yarn glide smoothly.

Not So Kinky

Choose flexible and smooth cables. Some sets come with swivel ones that rotate 360 degrees as you knit.

Sweet Connections

Connectors are clever gadgets to create extra-long cables. Perfect for bigger projects, afghans, and blankets. Most of the best interchangeable knitting needles come with these.

Let’s Put A Stop To That

End caps are versatile tools. They stop stitches coming off the cables when the interchangeable needles are removed. Perfect for when you want to change tips or try on a garment to check it.

Other Nifty Tools

Some sets come with a pin. This helps give leverage to make sure the connection is strong.

Grippers are also helpful in connecting the tip and cable. Simply place one over a needle and another over the wire and twist the two parts in the opposite direction.

Stitch Markers come in very handy to mark the start of a round, pattern repeats in lace, where to increase and decrease.

4. Lykke Driftwood Interchangeable Gift Set in Grey Denim Pouch

Lykke Driftwood Interchangeable Gift Set in Grey Denim Pouch

Lykke is a Norwegian word for happiness, and they aim to, you guessed it – Make knitters happy.

With the 5” sets they come in 3 different styles, the one I’m featuring here is the Driftwood Interchangeable Needles in the Grey Denim pouch.

There is also the Indigo set of interchangeable knitting needles, which has blue ends with a blue denim pouch. The Umber Set which has golden brown ends and a mustard-colored pouch.

The tips in this set are a soft, weathered grey. They aren’t made from driftwood, rather from birch. Users have commented on how they love the feel of the wood needles and how it warms in their hands

The 5” sets come in the following size tips (in both US sizing and Millimeters (mm)

  • US4/3.5mm, US5/3.75mm, US6/4mm, US7/4.5mm, US8/5mm, US9/5.5mm, US10/6mm, US10/6.5mm US11/8mm, US13/9mm, US15/10mm, US17/12m
  • 2 cords for 24″ length, 2 for 32″ length, 1 for 40″ length
  • It comes with 2 connectors, 4 keys, 8 stoppers all enclosed in a Grey Denim Carrying Case.

The tips are not as pointy as other brands, but they are not blunt or dull either. A good in-between tip.

The knitting needles are handcrafted in Kathmandu, Nepal. The company says there is no mechanized automation in creating quality needle tips, only human craft skills.

When first using these needles, tighten the join between cable and tip with the key that’s included in the kit. The cable key looks like a piece of wire with a loop at the end.

This makes sure that both are securely fastened together before you start knitting. No-one wants to be merrily knitting away and have the tip and cable separate. That would be a disaster.

Be careful when you order your set you’re getting the right one. The set I have featured here is the Driftwood Interchangeable Set in the grey denim pouch.

Pros

  • Wooden tips have a smooth needle finish and lightweight
  • The weathered grey look is appealing
  • The joins between the tip and cable don’t snag the yarn
  • Connecting the cable with the tip uses a screw join, be sure to use the cable key for a secure connection
  • Twelve different knitting needles sizes and the labels for each size is etched into the end of the needle tip.
  • Cables are flexible
  • Great for magic loop method
  • Warming wood needles are great for arthritic hands

Cons

  • Some users felt the cable connectors are too long and snagged the yarn.

    • Hi Sharon. Thanks for the question, I have added it to the post above. For most brands the standard length range from 16 inches to 40 inches, this is the measurement from tip to tip, which includes the length of each needle plus the length of the cable. The standard length of needle tips – Short Tips are from 3.5 to 4 inches and Long Tips from 5 to 5.5 inches.

  1. Hi Jodie,

I bought a set of interchangeable needles from Amazon and found that the shortest cord in the set was still way too long to work on my typical projects which are clothing and accessories for my two young grandchildren. I can’t handle DPN’s. Do you know if/where I could purchase shorter (4-8”) cords and whether they would be compatible. Thank you for your very thorough and informative review.

    Reply
    • I have done some research to see what people are buying in relation to cords with your set on Amazon.
It seems that the Knitter’s Pride interchangeable cords are often bought with the Yoosoo brand.
Although there is no cord that I can find that is shorter than 8 inches in the Knitter’s Pride brand.
There was a comment on the Amazon page that said it is unlikely to find an alternative brand for shorter cables.
I will do some more research and if I have any good news for you, I will be back in touch.

      • That’s what I need, too. Did you find any short cords? I’m trying to make hand warmers. The YouTube video I watched had a woman with a very short cord. It made knitting the hand warmers look easy. That’s why I ordered my set of interchangeable needles.

        • Hi Tina. Some lovely people got back in touch with their suggestions for shorter cords. Please see below

          – Possibly, I think the ChiaoGoo TWIST Shorties Red Lace Interchangeable Knitting Set comes with 2” & 3” tips and 5”, 6” and 8” cable lengths…(tip sizes US 0, US 1, US 1.5, US 2.25, and US 3) so….
          2” tip + 5” cable + 2” tip = 9” length / 3” tip + 5” cable + 3” tip = 11” length
          2” tip + 6” cable + 2” tip = 10” length / 3” tip + 6” cable + 3” tip = 12” length
          2” tip + 8” cable + 2” tip = 12” length / 3” tip + 8” cable + 3” tip = 14” length
The blue shorties set are larger tip sizes.

          – You are correct! Both the red mini shorties and the blue small shorties will give you 9” to 14” total lengths. I have both sets and love them for the versatility!

          I’ve taken a look at the Blue ChiaoGoo Twist Shorties (US-4 Thru US-8) Interchangeable Knitting Set as both the above knitters mentioned this set. The set contains both 2β€³and 3β€³ (5cm & 8cm) tips allowing for short circulars 9” through 14β€³ (23cm – 36cm) long. Sizes are US 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.5 and 5 mm) with three Blue, X-Flex (S) join cables – 5β€³, 6β€³ & 8β€³ (13cm, 15cm & 30cm).

          Hope this helps. Cheers Jodie

  2. Hi Jodie,
I’ve been recently looking into investing in an exchangeable needle set and saw the Clover set. In general I really like Clover needles; they fit my hands well, have nice points and seem to hold up very well. I work with smaller items though and was wondering if you knew of a good set with smaller cords? Cords and needles that would give a total length of 12” and 14”??

    • Hi Katie. That’s great to hear that you like your Clover needles and what you like about them. I don’t know any brands that offer those lengths but will ask my lovely readers. I’ll get back to you. Cheers Jodie πŸ™‚

A few users have reported they unscrewed whilst knitting, I wonder though if they really screwed them good and tight before starting. Many people love this set and had no problems of the connections coming undone.

    • Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting Alyssa! I have a lot to learn about crocheting. My goal is to one day make the Persian Dreams blanket. Lovely that you will make a wide range of knitted items. Having a set of interchangeable needles is certainly helpful. It will depend on what needle material you prefer as in wood/bamboo, plastic or metal. I’ve found knitting with bamboo easy when I first began my knitting adventures. I am currently using a fixed ChiaoGoo stainless steel tip circular needle to knit socks. I am enjoying the smoothness of the steel and they are light weight. I also know knitters who have a range of needle tip materials in interchangeable sets πŸ™‚ I’d recommend the Clover Takumi Combo set for beginners as there are 12 needle sizes and 5 cords. Good range for all sorts of projects. There are more details above in my post. Happy knitting! Cheers Jodie πŸ™‚

      • Hi Jodie, Thank you for your suggestions. I purchased the Hiya Hiya 4in Interchangeable needles. They are exactly what I was looking for! They swivel, the bamboo (or maybe it is wood?) is a good combo of grip\slip and the storage case is both pretty and functional. I just finished my first real sweater, the Weekender, during a KAL with my local yarn store. I learned that I really like these needles and that I did NOT enjoy knitting slim sleeves in the round with DPNs. I am thinking of buying shorter tips that would work with this set in order to get a smaller diameter circle.

  5. Hi Jodie, What a wonderful compilation you have made for us. I am 50, and just learned to knit about four months ago. I had no idea I would love knitting so much. I just finished my first project, 800 yard shawl by Expression Fiber Art, called Copeland. I accidentally got Roving, but I loved it so much, I insisted to knit that into a very fine shawl. My next is Leander Shawl, by Expression Fiber Arts, and using some wool from FibreFox in the UK…should be here in the next couple of days…Going from bulky to fingerling. Again, thank you for putting time into this, I am ordering some circular knitting needles, and were not sure which ones to get, and this was fantastic….Happy Knitting…Ginger

You will notice the difference going from bulky weight yarn to fingering weight. So much fun to be had! Enjoy your next projects and do let me know what needles you end up choosing. – DyakCraft Heavy Metals go from 0 to 3. Dyakcraft small sizes
          – There are four interchangeable sets in sock size range: Chiaogoo Twist Mini, Hiya Hiya Sock Sharps, DyakCraft Heavy Metals, and KA Switch. The first three are stainless steel, the last one is bamboo. The first one starts at 1.5mm/US000, the other three from 2mm/US0 (and they have swivelling cables).
          – I definitely recommend the Chiaogoo mini interchangeable set!
          – Hiya Hiya interchangeables start at US #2. They have a sock set that goes from US 2 down to US 0. That set only comes with β€œsharp” metal tips and I don’t know the length of the tips. For the regular sets you can get metal or bamboo tips, sharps or regular, and 4 or 5-inch tip lengths. And you can order almost any accessory you can think of.

          Hope this helps πŸ™‚

  7. Hi There,

New reader, I tried to look through your responses but didn’t see anything mentioned here. I have been using the Clover needles as individual purchases. Do you know if screw on cables and needles can be compatible. are there certain brands that you know of that work well with the Clover interchangeable needles?

    • Hi Jessica. Thanks for your question regarding whether Clover Interchangeable needle tips will work with other brands of cables. I will do a bit of research and get back to you. Cheers Jodie

    • Hi Jessica, some very lovely people on Ravelry replied when I asked about other brand cables with Clover interchangeable needles.
      Here’s what they said:
‘oddpaw’ – I don’t have much info to share, only to say they don’t work with Knit Picks interchangeables (at least not the ones I have, which I bought many years ago).

Clover has the screw end attached to the needle and the cable end is hollow; for KP it’s the opposite, the screw end is attached to the cable and the needle is hollow.

Maybe looking at images online of other brands could give you an idea if they are of similar construction? Sorry I can’t be of more help.

‘imported’- I’m similar to OddPaw (but I know absolutely nothing)- but have read in Amazon reviews that they don’t work w/ Knitter’s Pride cables – so that would also encompass Knit Pro, (probably Lykke(sp) / Barcelona, etc,) or any others of that family/not family).

The only other spin cables I know of are Chiaogoo Spin, Seeknit /KA (Kinki Amibari), and Tulip C brands (there are probably others). They all have a male tip on the needle.(Chiaogoo’s Red lace cables fit their spin needles {vice/versa}).

I think I read somewhere that the Takumi Clover needle has a longer thread (and Takumi cable is one-size fits all needle sizes). So, if that is true – fitting snugly in other cables w/ shorter ferrules is probably not do-able.

I guess the user could visit an LYS or friend that has other brands where the tips have a male end (hmm.. oh darn Covid) to try them out.

There’s a start for you I hope. Do let me know if you find a match, it would certainly be helpful to others. Cheers Jodie πŸ™‚
