What Are Interchangeable Knitting Needles?

Interchangeable Knitting Needles are a needle tips pair joined by a flexible cable. However, the cable isn’t fixed.

They’re fabulous for knitting in the round. Sweaters, hats, socks, and more.

How Do They Differ From Fixed Circulars?

The cord isn’t fused to the knitting needles at each end. The knitting needles and cable are separate pieces connecting with a screw link or twist and click.

Typically the ends have a screw-type fitting. The cables have a hollow end.

The attaching method varies.

  • Click-connection
  • Screw on
  • A little key for locking the tips to the cables.

What’s To Love

Knitting patterns call for specific needle size and cable length. The advantage of having a quality interchangeable needle set is you have many different options.

This saves knitters realizing their craft basket contains knitting needles they never use! (1) Sometimes, they have multiples of the same needle size!

Quality Interchangeable Needles solve these problems.

The best interchangeable needles have various knitting needles with cables in a case. Mix and match the knitting needles and cables. Construct as many circular knitting needles as the parts allow.

When the project grows, the weight rests on your lap.

Thread thin embroidery yarn through the pin hole (the pinhole is before the tip) on the needle or connector for a life line. Great for lace knitting.

Work on many projects with the same tip. Remove the needles from the cable add two end caps to secure your stitches. Then use the ends on another project.

Make extra-long cables by using a connector to join different interchangeable needles cables.

How Are They Measured?

From tip to tip. (The length of the interchangeable needles and the wire connecting them combined.) They range from 16 to 40″.

What Does The Best Interchangeable Needle Set Have?

The best interchangeable needle set has these:

  • Smooth joins
  • Both parts remain connected
  • The best interchangeable needles have flexible cables
  • At least 6 diameters of tips
  • At least 4 lengths of cables
  • Smart looking case
  • End caps

What Makes The Best Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set

Most sets are an investment. Consider these criteria before buying.

What Needle Material?

They’re made from many types of materials, like aluminum, carbon fiber, stainless steel, wood, bamboo, or plastic.

The best kinds of interchangeables are high-quality items. Choose the material you enjoy working with and what suits your projects and yarns.

What Knitting Projects Do You Do?

If you create many projects, having larger ones for your knitting activity is good. If you’re a lace knitter or sock knitter, opt for smaller needle sizes.

Short Or Long Tips?

Some knitters swear by interchangeable needles with long ones (5-5.5″.) They’re easier to hold and don’t cause cramping in the hands.

The short ones (3.5-4″) make smaller circles. Great for socks or sleeves.

These measurements are from the end of the needle to the cable connection.

What Are Lace Tips?

Some are ‘Lace Tip needles”. They’re sharp and pointy for intricate stitches when knitting lace patterns.

Not So Kinky

Choose flexible and smooth cables. Some sets have rotating swivel ones.

Sweet Connections

Connectors create extra-long cables. Perfect for bigger projects, afghans, and blankets. Most of the best interchangeable knitting needles have these.

Let’s Put A Stop To It

End caps stop stitches coming off the cables when the interchangeable needles are removed. Perfect for trying on a garment to check it.

Other Nifty Tools

Some sets have a pin. This tool ensures the connection point is strong.

Grippers connect the tip and cable. Place one over a needle and another over the wire. Twist the parts in the opposite direction.

Stitch Markers come in handy to

  • Mark a round beginning
  • Pattern repeats
  • Where to increase and decrease.

The knitting needles set by Clover are my preference. The bamboo tips are smooth, lightweight, and comfortable. The cables are flexible and don’t kink. This creates the best knitting experience.

An interchangeable knitting set is a worthwhile investment. If you already have interchangeable knitting needles set, I’d love to hear about it. Tell me in the comments.

    • Hi Jemima. Knit Picks makes Sunstruck needles. Screw the tip into the cable end to attach the cable and needle tips. Place the key (which looks like a straight pin with a loop at the end) in the hole at the end of the cable, and twist the needle tip a bit more to tighten. Here’s a link.

  1. Hi Jodie,
I’ve been recently looking into investing in an exchangeable needle set and saw the Clover set. In general I really like Clover needles; they fit my hands well, have nice points and seem to hold up very well. I work with smaller items though and was wondering if you knew of a good set with smaller cords? Cords and needles that would give a total length of 12” and 14”??

    Reply
    • Hi Katie, some lovely people got back in touch with their suggestions.

From Imported – Possibly, I think the ChiaoGoo TWIST Shorties Red Lace Interchangeable Knitting Set comes with 2” & 3” tips and 5”, 6” and 8” cable lengths…(tip sizes US 0, US 1, US 1.5, US 2.25, and US 3) so….
      2” tip + 5” cable + 2” tip = 9” length / 3” tip + 5” cable + 3” tip = 11” length
      2” tip + 6” cable + 2” tip = 10” length / 3” tip + 6” cable + 3” tip = 12” length
      2” tip + 8” cable + 2” tip = 12” length / 3” tip + 8” cable + 3” tip = 14” length
The blue shorties set are larger tip sizes.

From Lunabella- You are correct! Both the red mini shorties and the blue small shorties will give you 9” to 14” total lengths. I have both sets and love them for their versatility!

      I’ve taken a look at the Blue ChiaoGoo Twist Shorties (US-4 Thru US-8) Interchangeable Knitting Set as both the above knitters mentioned this set. The set contains both 2″and 3″ (5cm & 8cm) tips allowing for short circulars 9” through 14″ (23cm – 36cm) long. Sizes are US 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (3.5, 3.75, 4, 4.5 and 5 mm) with three Blue, X-Flex (S) join cables – 5″, 6″ & 8″ (13cm, 15cm & 30cm).

I hope this is a good start. Cheers Jodie

    • Hi Renee. Tighten the connection as much as you can. Some have reported unscrewing while knitting. Do they really tighten them all the way before knitting? Most didn’t have problems with the connections. Cheers Jodie

  2. Hi Jodie,
I am specifically looking for a swiveling interchangeable needle set in wood or bamboo, any brands\sets that fit those parameters?

    Reply
      • Hi Jodie, Thank you for your suggestions. I purchased the Hiya Hiya 4in Interchangeable needles. They are exactly what I was looking for! They swivel, the bamboo (or maybe it is wood?) is a good combo of grip\slip and the storage case is both pretty and functional. I just finished my first real sweater, the Weekender, during a KAL with my local yarn store. I learned that I really like these needles and that I did NOT enjoy knitting slim sleeves in the round with DPNs. I am thinking of buying shorter tips that would work with this set in order to get a smaller diameter circle.

        • Hi Penelope. Great to hear! How lovely to finish your first real sweater. I just took at look at The Weekender design by Andrea Mowry, it’s gorgeous. So glad to have been able to help you find needles to suit you. Cheers Jodie

  3. Hi Jodie, What a wonderful compilation you have made for us. I am 50, and just learned to knit about four months ago. I had no idea I would love knitting so much. I just finished my first project, 800 yard shawl by Expression Fiber Art, called Copeland. I accidentally got Roving, but I loved it so much, I insisted to knit that into a very fine shawl. My next is Leander Shawl, by Expression Fiber Arts, and using some wool from FibreFox in the UK…should be here in the next couple of days…Going from bulky to fingerling. Again, thank you for putting time into this, I am ordering some circular knitting needles, and were not sure which ones to get, and this was fantastic….Happy Knitting…Ginger

    • Hi Ginger. Chandi’s designs are lovely, I took a look at her shawls. So glad you found this post helpful. If you are happy to share a pic of your finished shawl with our readers, I’d love to see it. You’ll notice a difference going from bulky to fingering yarn. Have fun! Let me know what needles you choose for your next project. Cheers Jodie

  4. Hi There,

New reader, I tried to look through your responses but didn’t see anything mentioned here. I have been using the Clover needles as individual purchases. Do you know if screw on cables and needles can be compatible. are there certain brands that you know of that work well with the Clover interchangeable needles?

  5. Hi Jodie, thank you for this lovely review. Do you mind sharing the length size of the Clover Takumi needle tips? Is there a significant difference from the length of the Chiaogoo Red Lace 4inch tips.
I am looking into buying a complete set but just need a bit of guidance as to needle length. I am leaning towards the 5 inch set but would still like to be able to knit hats. Will it suffice to buy an extra 8inch chord and just use 5 inch needles (18 inch all in all) or is that not recommendable? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thank you

    Reply
    • Hi Cheryl. Thanks for getting in touch re the Clover Takumi Needle tips length. Tip length to join is 9.5 cm (3.75 inches) for the needles sized US 3 to 10 1/2 (3.25mm to 6.5 mm), but 10.5 cm (4.13 inches) for US sizes 8, 13 & 15 (8 mm, 9mm, & 10mm). So these are shorter tips than the 5 inch set that you are leaning towards. Can you please tell me which 5 inch set you are interested in? Knowing that will help as there may not be a 8 inch cord available. P.S I am going now to update my post with this information about the tip lengths for the Clover Takumi set. Cheers Jodie
