Lantern Moon Knitting Needles And What Are Good Alternatives?

Excellent news!! I’ve recently learned that Knitter’s Pride/Knit Pro have taken over the manufacturing of Lantern Moon Needles.

I’ve updated my post on 21 January 2022.

Lantern Moon was a small company that made handcrafted knitting needles, bags, and accessories. The best knitting needles made by artisans.

In working collaboratively with local artisans, the mission of the organization was to preserve the indigenous craft and handwork of Vietnam and Cambodia. As a result of ongoing training and ethical employment, the Lantern Moon brand improved the lives of their workers and families for more than 16 years.

The business closed in 2018 but the manufacturing of the Ebony Destiny knitting needles has recommenced.

Recently Lantern Moon’s founders, Joel & Sharon Woodcock, visited Knitter’s Pride/KnitPro’s factory and offices in Jaipur, India and left convinced Knitter’s Pride/KnitPro’s manufacturing expertise would benefit Lantern Moon’s products. They were particularly pleased to see that the Ebony wood used in the knitting needle production will remain faithful to the original design.

Lantern Moon will be run as an independent brand under Knitter’s Pride/KnitPro, which has the production capacity to consistently produce quality knitting and crochet tools.

I explain where to find them, and the best alternatives.

Lantern Moon Knitting Needles

The luxury needles were made of Ebony, Rosewood and Palmwood crafted by artisans in Vietnam and Bali, Indonesia. Lantern Moon’s philosophy was to support the skills and cultures of these artisans.

They supported socially and globally conscious living as they worked directly with the producers to provide income, education and self-reliance to those women and their families.

The natural materials inspiring their Lantern Moon Knitting Needles were combined with traditional handcrafting skills, passed down from generation to generation.

Their knitting needles were crafted in a family owned and managed business that provided training and opportunities.

Lantern Moon Knitting needles were crafted in twenty-nine steps to produce an heirloom quality tool.

The “liquid silk” finishing process made for an enjoyable knitting experience and prevented the splintering that can be experienced in a wooden needle.

The types of needles they made were Straights, Circulars, Lantern Moon Double Pointed Needles and Interchangeable circulars.

At the time of writing you can still purchase some of the straights, double pointed needles and circulars.

The Rosewood knitting needles seem to be difficult to find.

Alternatives To Lantern Moon Needles

I highly recommend the wooden needles available at Knit Picks.

Knit Picks has a company philosophy of ethical manufacturing.

On their website they state, “We work closely with responsible partners and spend several months of travel each year to ensure safe and respectful working conditions that exclude child labor.”

Knit Picks have a variety of laminated birch wood needles.

The Rainbow, Caspian, Radiant, Sunstruck and Majestic needles are made up of layers of laminated wood. This process creates a strong and smooth needle, which means yarn glides easily when working with them.

Caspian Needles Knit Picks

Caspian come in an interchangeable longer tip and shorter tip size, fixed circulars, double pointed needles and cable needles.

Rainbow Needles Knit Picks

Rainbow are available in interchangeable circular, fixed circular and double pointed versions.

Radiant Needles Knit Picks

Radiant are available in interchangeable circular, fixed circular and double pointed versions and straights.

Sunstruck Needles Knit Picks

Sunstruck come in interchangeable circular, fixed circulars, double pointed needles and straights.

Majestic Needles Knit Picks

The Majestic range has interchangeable circular, fixed circulars and double pointed needles.

It’s excellent that Lantern Moon Ebony needles are being produced again!

  1. Hi Jodie.
I am utterly thrilled that Lantern Moon needles are coming back! I own full original interchangeable sets in both ebony and rosewood. My question is whether the needles will be returning in sizes 2.00 mm and 2.25 mm in the double points? These are my most frequently used sizes for socks. Also, are there any plans to bring back the straight single points?

    • Hi Janet. That’s so good to hear your joy! I will check on whether or not they are planning those 2.00mm and 2.25mm DPNS. I will also double check the Single Point needles. Cheers Jodie

        • Thank you, Jodie, for following up on my questions. I have a few dpn sets in ebony, and I treasure them more than all my others. Now I will treasure them even more. I intend to check out the straights and pick up some most-used sizes.
