I highly recommend using a pattern for a Lace Scarf. The designer gives details of the yarn weight and the yardage.

The example pattern I’m using is the Lace Knitting Pattern For Beginners Chunky Scarf by Davina of Sheep & Stitch. It’s a simple Lace Scarf pattern using basic lace stitches, using super bulky weight yarn. A thicker yarn is a great option for beginners. Not really suitable for a child’s scarf as most kids don’t like this much coziness around their necks.
