Boye Knitting Needles – My Guide – Are They Any Good And What To Look Out For

Founded in 1906, Boye® Needle Company was the first American manufacturer of crochet hooks and knitting needles. Precision knitting needles, hooks, supplies, and accessories are what the brand is known for.

What Are Boye Knitting Needles?

Designed for superior performance and perfection, the concave ends help prevent dropped stitches, an essential feature for any knitter. The rounded heads allow for fast knitting without yarns splitting.

These are an economical brand available in brick-and-mortar craft stores, shops, and large retailers. Craft stores have carried them for many years.

These ones are often favorites of and recommended for beginners to use due to their affordability, being lightweight and comfortable, and relatively good quality.

All feature Boye Perfection Points®.

The aluminum needles variety comes in an interchangeable needles set. More recommendations below.

Boye Size 7 (4-1/2mm) Needles – Straight

Boye size 7 (4-1/2mm) knitting needles - single point
  • Length: 10″

Beginners have reported they found it a little difficult to get used to the slipperiness of the aluminum needles at the start. They enjoyed knitting with them due to the lightweightness in their hands.

A very affordable price. Be aware some customers reported only one needle was delivered when the listing clearly shows a pair of needles.

  • Cable Lengths Available: Only 16″

These circular aluminum needles are precisely sized and accurately balanced. Each size has a different color. The unique Perfection Points help prevent slipping of yarn for easy knitting.

The cable is clear plastic. Some users didn’t like it as it wasn’t flexible enough.

Boye US 13 (9mm) Circular Knitting Needles

Boye Size 13 (9mm) Circular Knitting Needles
  • Needle Length: 36-inch from needle tip to tip: two needle tips plus cable.

This is in US size 13 (9mm).

Some users found the plastic cable likes to hold its original shape and can be a nuisance by getting in the way. A quick solution to this problem is to soak the cable in hot water for a few minutes to soften it and straighten it out.

40-piece Boye Needlemaster Interchangeable Set

40-piece Boye Needlemaster Interchangeable Set

This is their interchangeable aluminum needle set with a range of sizes and several cable lengths, 40 pieces in total. A great choice for a beginner.

The clear plastic cables are listed as being flexible. Many users said they’re very stiff and need to be placed in hot water to make them workable.

Some people found the joins between the cord and the needle were rough, and their wool snagged. This brand of circular needles isn’t known for being particularly durable. The cord can separate from the tips with time and use.

At first glance, this looks like a good option due to affordability and the number of needle sets you get. But I wouldn’t recommend this product.

The aluminum needles aren’t marked with the sizing, however each size has different colors. You would have to always put them back in their spot in the case when not in use.

The hassles people have had with the flexibility of the cables and them coming apart don’t give me confidence in recommending this set.

As with any product, some knitters loved these aluminum needles and found workarounds to fix the problems mentioned above. I suggest reading the customer reviews to make sure you’re informed before you buy it.

Your Questions Answered

Where Are Boye Knitting Needles Made?

They are no longer manufactured in the United States since the company’s merge in 1989. These tools are now made in China.

Who Makes Boye Knitting Needles?

The Simplicity Craft Group, the parent company of Boye, who acquired the brand in 1989.

The good features of boye knitting needles are they’re lightweight and affordable. A good option for beginners looking to learn on straight needles.

I’d stay clear of this brand’s circular and interchangeables. The stiffness of the cables and the rough joins or joins coming apart, don’t make for enjoyable, hassle-free knitting.

  1. Several years ago I received a Boye Interchangeable knitting set as a gift. Recently while working on a project with size 8 needle one end of the 14” cable broke off at the end leaving the teeth in my needle thus making the 8 needle unusable. I have not been able to replace this cable or needle as our local stores only carry a full set and not individual parts. It would be great to have these replaced as they are a common convent size to use. Is there a local source where I could purchase these?
